Fun Filtering
Hypothesis:
I predict that the plastic marbles would float to the top and the flour would go through the screen leaving the uncooked rice on top. Materials: - Plastic Marbles - Window Screen - Uncooked Rice - Flour - Wax Paper - Water - Steels - Magnets Procedure: 1. Mix plastic marbles, uncooked rice, steels and flour together in one large bowl. 2. Use a magnet to pass through above the mixture. 3. Pour one cup of water into the mixture of marbles and observe what happens. 4. Drain the water and create a funnel shape using the wax paper. 5. Slowly pour the mixture on a window screen above a bowl. Observations: I noticed that the plastic marbles went to the top immediately. Also, during filtering, the rice stayed on top. Conclusion: In conclusion, plastic floats to the top when pouring water which is an easier way to use rather than using mechanical picking. Furthermore, the smaller sediments pass through the screen. I can relate this to real life while filtering water because they use screens in order to take out fish, rocks and more. Three different types of separations methods were shown including floating, filtering and magnetism. |
